This post will be used to record all of the modifications I have made to the Balco 3d Printer I purchased from Dick Smith Online (owned by Kogan).

I’ll also include useful resources here, such as on line stores, parts and groups.

Summary

Angus of Maker’s Muse provides some background on the Balco 3d Printer

The Balco 3d Printer is a re badge of the Wanhao Duplicator i3 v2.1 and is imported by WinPlus, the same company behind the import of the Cocoon Create 3d Printers that have been imported for sale in Aldi Supermarkets. The Cocoon is based on the slightly older Wanaho Duplicator i3 v2 (an upgrade to v2.1 is available in parts form from Cocoon).

Resources

Facebook Groups:

These are all groups I am a member of, I have found the discussion very useful in helping with modifications and printer tuning.

Duplicator i3 (Di3) 3D Printer Group (Wanhao, Monoprice, Cocoon Create.) – Australian group for Wanhao Duplicator i3 and re badges like the Balco
Australian Duplicator i3 / Cocoon Create / Wanhao / Balco – International group for Wanhao Duplicator i3 and re badges like the Balco
3d Printing – General 3d printing group, over 40,000 members strong

Australian Stores:

I am only listing stores where I have purchased or received an item from. This list will obviously grow over time.

3DFILLIES – Filament provider at good rates for Australia, so far I have purchased 1.75 mm PLA in Orange and Purple and both have been great. Delivery was fast. Will be buying more filament from here in the future.
Aus3D – 3d Printer Supplies based in Australia. I have purchased a glass bed and an exhaust fan for mods on my printer. Both times delivery was fast and straight forward and parts were great. Although more expensive then buying directly from China, if you need a part quickly, I have found Aus3D to be great to deal with.

Sites:

Below are a few sites that have excellent documentation for the printer. I have used a few articles from these to help tune or mod my Balco.

3d Printer Wiki (Wanhao Duplicator i3 Section) – So much useful information here, a great place to tick off some tuning and basic mods.

You Tube:

Below are some popular 3D Printing personalities from You Tube. They all offer a unique look at different aspects of the 3D Printing world.

Maker’s Muse
Tom’s 3D
3D Printing Nerd
Lars Christensen – Lars’ content is more focused around cad and cam. I find his Fusion 360 tutorials awesome. Definitely worth checking out if you want to get into Fusion 360 or other CAD design software.

Modifications:

Below are some modifications I have made to my Balco. They are quite simple but have really helped with the print quality.

Wanhao I3 Filament Guide for Top Spool Holder
Locker for Wanhao I3 Filament Guide for Top Spool Holder
DiiiCooler for Wanhao Duplicator i3 / Maker Select
Wanhao Duplicator i3 Tool Holder
Dual Z-axis alignment bars
Di3 hotbed spring cup
Wanhao i3 Thumbwheel alternative

I also have installed a 4mm glass bed (from Aus3D – link above) with 0.5mm thermal silicon pads mounted directly on to the Buildtak like surface. I did have to adjust my Z end stop up one notch to counter the new thickness of the build plate.

Pictures to come.
